Zimbabwe wicketkeeper Clive Madanade creates unwanted record by conceding most byes in a Test innings

Zimbabwean wicketkeeper Clive Madande broke an unwanted 90-year-old record when he conceded 42 byes in a Test innings against Ireland on Friday.

The runs conceded by the 24-year-old Madande, who endured a difficult debut after being ducked on the opening day at Stormont on Thursday, were more than Ireland’s 40-run first-innings lead, which they made 250 in reply to Zimbabwe’s 210.

The bye days were not entirely his fault as he had to deal with his bowlers hitting several balls to the legside and late swing after the ball had already passed the bat.

One consolation for Madande was the record he broke, set by Englishman Les Ames, widely regarded as one of the finest wicketkeeper-batsmen in world cricket. He gave away 37 byes of the 327 byes Australia had played in a Test match at The Oval in 1934.

Zimbabwe could still have led in the first innings had it not been for Andy McBrine (28) and Matthew Humphreys (27 not out) who made it a 47-run stand.

Joylord Gumbie and Prince Masvaure batted out the final 15 minutes to put Zimbabwe 12-0 at stumps in their second innings on a rain-affected second day of this one-off Test, trailing by 28 runs.

Former Zimbabwe international Peter Moor was previously Ireland’s top scorer with 79.

It was the highest ever Test score for an Irish season opener, with Moor just four points off his best score, set while playing for Zimbabwe in 2018.

Zimbabwe’s Tanaka Chivanga (3-39) took his first three Test wickets in only his second match at this level, while fellow paceman Blessing Muzarabani also impressed with 3-53.
