‘You gotta hand it to Kamaru’… Joe Rogan claims UFC ‘owes’ Kamaru Usman next welterweight title shot

Reigning UFC welterweight champion Belal Muhammad has opened the door to several contenders for his first title defense, but Joe Rogan believes it should be against Kamaru Usman.

Following his underdog win over Leon Edwards in Manchester in July, Belal Muhammad has indicated his desire to become an active champion and has highlighted a number of contenders for his first defence.

Undefeated contender Shavkat Rakhmonov seemed like a sure bet for the next title fight after his impressive six-fight winning streak in the UFC. However, Muhammad toyed with the idea of defending his belt against Kamaru Usman.

Joe Rogan Claims UFC Owes Kamaru Usman Next Welterweight Title Shot

Despite ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ having lost three straight bouts and his last fight being at middleweight, the idea seems to be gaining traction.

After a last-minute loss to Khamzat Chimaev last October, the 37-year-old has spoken about the possibility of moving up to 185 pounds full-time, but has already indicated he wants to return to welterweight.

UFC commentator and icon Joe Rogan claimed that the promotion “owes” the former champion the next title fight because he was willing to fight “Borz” on short notice.

“I think they’re giving (Belal Muhammad) Kamaru (Usman), that’s the big money fight, it’s the smart fight. They owe Kamaru because Kamaru took Khamzat (Chimaev) on 10 days’ notice,” Rogan claimed on the Joe Rogan Experience.

“And also a three-rounder instead of a five-rounder. When he won the third… It seemed to me that he would start third. He had to figure it out and also trust his gas tank.

“That guy trained for ten days for one of the scariest motherfuckers on Earth. On Earth! I say give it to Kamaru, because I think Kamaru deserved it on that alone.

Belal Muhammad’s first title contender is still unknown

‘Remember The Name’ recently claimed that he thinks Usman is a stronger opponent than Rakhmonov, as he sees holes in ‘The Nomad’s’ game.

“For me, Usman is a tougher fight. When I see Shavkat, I see a lot of holes and I see a lot of paths to victory,” Muhammad told MMAFighting.

Another reason Rogan believes the UFC should give Usman his next title shot is because he is now 37 years old and may not have many more years at the top of the division.

“You don’t have many years left of Kamaru now, he’s 37 now… I say give him another chance. Shavkat, with every win he’s a legend. A bigger and bigger legend.”
