Xander Schauffele jokes he ‘can’t wait to drink from’ Claret Jug after British Open

After winning his second major championship of the year, Xander Schauffele had only one thing on his mind.

The golfer wanted to take a sip from the Claret Jug, the coveted trophy for the winner of the British Open.

“I can’t wait to drink from it,” Schauffele said. “My dad is here with me, so I’ll let him do the honors. Whatever he wants.”

Schauffele also indicated how much winning the event meant to him.

“It means a lot. It’s something we all play for and it’s really a dream come true to hold on to this and it hasn’t really sunk in yet,” he said. “My brain is still churning through this amazing property here and trying to get through the gaps. I can’t wait to sit back and have a moment with this Claret Jug.”

Schauffele had an impressive day at Royal Troon Golf Course in Scotland, shooting 6-under 65 on Sunday to finish at 9-under par, two strokes ahead of Justin Rose and Billy Horschel. His performance in Round 4 was his best at the Open, with six birdies and never a stroke over par.

The win is his second on the tour this year and also his second major career victory. Schauffele won the PGA Championship in May and has five other top-five finishes this year.
