Xabi Alonso plans Liverpool raid to sign defender

Instead of bringing in new players as the transfer window approaches, Liverpool could lose players.

The Reds have had a quiet summer transfer window, with no player signed so far.

They could still change that, but they only have 15 days left to strengthen their squad.

A team that finished third in the league and failed to win the Europa League despite being favourites to do so should have strengthened their squad, but they have found it difficult to complete deals for their targets.

The Reds could now lose one of their players to former player Xabi Alonso, who is now manager of German Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.

According to De Telegraaf, several clubs are interested in Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg, including Bayer Leverkusen.

The defender has dropped down the pecking order at Anfield and his future at the Merseyside club remains uncertain.

Is Sepp van den Berg on his way to Liverpool?

After spending time on loan at Preston North End, Schalke and Mainz, the player returns to Anfield this summer, where he now sits behind Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joe Gomez and Jarrel Quansah in the pecking order.

Despite the player getting the chance to show his talent in pre-season, he is not expected to get enough playing time during the season, which is why he wants to leave the club this summer.

Liverpool defender must leave for more playing time

After impressing at Mainz last season, the defender has attracted the attention of a number of clubs, most notably Leverkusen, who could lose their star centre-back Jonathan Tah to Bayern Munich this summer.

His future does not lie with the Merseyside club and the defender has realised it is time to leave Anfield to further develop as a player.

The 22-year-old needs to play regularly to continue developing and that is something he is not guaranteed at Liverpool.
