WWE’s Sami Zayn Reacts to Underdog Status as Intercontinental Champion

Sami Zayn recently celebrated 100 days as WWE Intercontinental Champion, and while it’s not even close to the record-breaking reign of his predecessor, GUNTHER, it’s still growing. However, when Zayn takes on former NXT Champion Bron Breakker for the title at SummerSlam, the odds will be stacked against him – though that’s nothing new.

“It’s an interesting (experience) when you’re the perpetual underdog, but also the champion at the same time,” Zayn mused on “Busted Open Radio.”

The Intercontinental Champion finds himself in the odd position of having the trust of both a champion and an industry veteran going up against a rookie straight out of “WWE NXT,” while most wrestling fans still root for his opponent. Zayn noted that despite Breakker’s inexperience, the second-generation wrestler has tremendous strength and athleticism on his side, and has the makings of a potentially huge star in WWE.

“This guy has a physical advantage, where I have an intellectual advantage,” Zayn said. “This guy is going to have a very magnetic personality eventually, if fans see that side of him… I think if he stays on the path, he’s going to be a very complete player, and he’s going to be more than just a strong guy who runs really fast and throws a great spear. I think there’s a lot more to his game than that. He’s going to be good, I just hope it doesn’t come at the expense of me at SummerSlam.”

Breakker theoretically agrees with his SummerSlam opponent, as he recently stated that he’s simply built differently than other stars in WWE, something he believes will make him a threat in the years to come. Zayn has already defeated Breakker once, as he was responsible for Breakker’s first pinfall loss on the main roster at the recent Money In The Bank event, where Zayn was also the underdog.
