WWE Bruce Prichard Talks Fan Favorite Eugene

Nick Dinsmore, better known as Eugene, won the hearts of WWE fans with his lovable personality in the wrestling ring. In a recent episode of his podcast “Something To Wrestle,” WWE CEO Bruce Prichard shared his admiration for Eugene and explained why he became a fan favorite.

“He was just a simple, fun character that the audience loved,” Prichard said, talking about what made this fictional character appealing. “Eugene,” Prichard said, comparing him to Ivan Putski, a wrestling icon from the Golden Age.

“That was Eugene: it was innocence – there was an innocence to him, and he was a lovable character,” he continued. Prichard added that Eugene was always a pleasure to work with, and his charm touched the audience.

While some online debate questioned whether Eugene’s portrayal was offensive or not, both Prichard and Dinsmore maintained that the character was embraced by supporters who objected to such insinuations. “If the audience didn’t like it and it sucked, they would have done that.

They would have been like, ‘No, this is horrible.’ They loved him and took him in,” Prichard concluded, indicating why Eugene was so successful in reaching viewers.

Understanding Eugene’s Character

Conrad Thompson, who co-hosted Bruce on this program, wondered whether Ivan Putski was playing a “special needs character” in his performances, similar to that of a character with a learning disability, as Eugene had done.

“We didn’t set out to do anything like that,” Prichard replied, categorically stating that this was not what we were trying to do. He went on to explain how Putski’s gimmick came from the fact that, as an immigrant, he was unfamiliar with the language or customs, which played well with Eugene’s naiveté and innocence.

Prichard clarified their intentions regarding Eugene, saying they had not made him stupid, but rather “a very naive and sheltered individual who loved everyone and who approached life with a different perspective than everyone else.”
