Wright stars in ‘Come to the Edge’

Two-time world surfing champion and NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) athlete Tyler Wright, along with Molly Picklum, Jack Robinson and Ethan Ewing, they will all make their Olympic surfing debut at Paris 2024. They will also feature in a documentary, called Come to The Edge, as they prepare to compete on the notoriously dangerous Tahitian wave, Teahupo’o.

In early May 2024, the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) announced the world-class surfing team that will compete at the famous Teahupo’o surf spot in Tahiti at the Paris Olympics. The team will build on the sport’s Olympic legacy that began in Tokyo 2020. Teahupoo is one of the most powerful and deadly waves in the world to surf.

With the aim of inspiring the nation, Surfing Australia has produced a one-hour television special called “Come to The Edge”. The story follows the Australian Irukandji team as they prepare to ride arguably the world’s most dangerous wave, Teauhpo’o, all in the context of the world’s biggest sporting event, the Olympic Games.

The Australian surfing team has an incredible record of success on the world stage, with Wright a two-time world champion and Picklum a two-time Championship Tour (CT) event winner. Robinson has won seven CT events, including last year’s Olympic venue in Tahiti and last month’s Margaret River Pro, while Ewing is a two-time CT event winner and finished runner-up at last year’s WSL.

The Teahupo’o venue also makes Olympic history as the furthest distance ever traveled for an Olympic event from the host city. The distance from Tahiti to Paris is about 100 kilometers further than that from Melbourne to Stockholm, where the 1956 Olympic equestrian events were held due to quarantine measures.

The surfing will take place in the first week of the Paris Olympics, with NSWIS athlete Tyler Wright set to compete in the women’s shortboard event from 28 July 2024.
