France vs Canada Head-to-Head

This is the third Women’s Soccer France vs Canada competition in Olympic history. Canada was the team that eliminated France in both of Les Bleues’ participations in the Olympic Games.

Canada defeated France 1–0 in the quarterfinals of Rio 2016 and 1–0 in the bronze medal match at London 2012. Interestingly, these are Canada’s only two wins in the last twelve meetings of this competition.

The last time they met was in 2023, when France won a friendly match 2-1. France are unbeaten in their last three head-to-head matches.

France survives shock

Things started promisingly enough for France in their opening match against Colombia. They scored three goals in the first half as Marie-Antoinette Katoto scored twice and Kenza Dali fired a shot that deflected off the crossbar and in.

Colombia bombarded France in the second half, however, and nearly turned it around. The Colombians scored a penalty in the 54th minute, making it 3-2 ten minutes later. That made for a nerve-wracking final phase of the match, and Colombia had chances to equalize.

Either way, France take the three points and should learn some lessons from the match. In a talented Olympic field, France can’t afford to let their guard down. They are the third favorite to win the tournament, behind the US and Spain, with +500 football betting chances.

Canada makes a comeback

Canada defeated New Zealand 2-1 in their opening Olympic match despite coach Bev Priestman being suspended. Priestman cannot coach for the remainder of the Games and could be fired after the tournament.

Canada was caught spying with a drone during a training session in New Zealand, leading to the arrest of a Canadian employee and the firing of Priestman.

Assistant coach Andy Spence has taken over as head coach and one of his substitutions made the difference on Thursday. With the score at 1-1 deep in the game, Evelyne Viens scored the winning goal for reigning gold medallist Canada.

Canada has three medals at the Olympic Gameswho have been in consecutive tournaments. They won gold in Tokyo 2020 and bronze in both 2016 and 2012.

After failing to advance from their group at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Canada have not lost a 90-minute match in 2024, even without retired legend Christine Sinclair. They are also unbeaten in two games against the USA this year, excluding penalties, and are on a 15-game scoring streak.

Jessie Fleming, Ashley Lawrence and Kadeisha Buchanan are three key players for this Canadian team.
