Explanation of the national women’s team competitions

How Qualification Works

League phase

During the Nations League qualifying round, teams competed in groups of four or three teams (League C) and over six match days between April and July, with each team playing one home game and one away game against all other teams in their group.

In terms of qualifying itself, the top two teams in each League A group will earn a place in the July 2025 finals, alongside hosts Switzerland (who competed in League B, despite having automatic qualification). The remaining seven places will be decided by two rounds of play-offs in October and November/December.

Play-offs

The first round of the play-offs is divided into two paths. In one path, the teams finishing third and fourth in League A play against the five group winners and the three best-placed runners-up in League C. (For the purpose of ranking the three best runners-up, results against the teams finishing fourth do not count.) The eight winners advance to the second round.

In the other first round, the four group winners and the two highest-placed second-placed teams in League B are drawn against the remaining two second-placed teams and four third-placed teams in League B in six draws. The six winners advance to the second round.

In the second round, teams from both paths meet and are drawn into seven ties, with the seven highest ranked teams seeded based on the overall ranking of the European Qualifiers. The seven winners advance to the final tournament.

The play-offs were adjusted where necessary to take into account the performance of host nation Switzerland, who play in Division B and are group winners but are assured of a place in the final tournament.

With Switzerland finishing as winners of Division B, the highest-ranked team in fourth place of Division B will complete the line-up for Round 1, Path 2 of the play-offs. The format for the six matches has been adjusted accordingly.

Promotion and relegation

Promotion and relegation are also at stake ahead of the next UEFA Women’s Nations League, which begins in the 2025–27 competition season:

• The winners, runners-up and third place of League A remain in League A;

• The number two and the three highest ranked teams in third place in League B will remain in League B;

• Numbers two, three and four in League C remain in League C;

• The winners of League B and C are promoted to the higher league;

• All teams finishing in fourth place in Divisions A and B, and the lowest-placed team finishing in third place in Division B, will be relegated to a lower division.
