Wojciech Szczesny: Former Arsenal, Juventus and Poland goalkeeper retires at 34

Former Arsenal and Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has retired at the age of 34.

Szczesny made 181 appearances for the Gunners after joining the club’s youth system in 2006 at the age of 16.

He joined Juve in 2017 and played 252 games, winning eight major trophies, before being sacked at the end of last season.

The Warsaw-born player made 84 appearances for Poland and played at four European Championships and two World Cups.

“Not only did I make my dreams come true, I also got to a place where my imagination didn’t even dare to take me,” Szczesny wrote on social media.

“I played at the highest level with the best players in history, without ever feeling inferior.

“I have made friends for life, created unforgettable memories and met people who have had an incredible impact on my life. Everything I have and everything I am, I owe to the beautiful game of football.”

Szczesny won two FA Cups and the 2014 Community Shield during his time in North London.

He also spent a short time on loan at Brentford in 2009–10 and spent two seasons on loan at Roma, before a trophy-winning spell at Juventus, winning three Serie A titles.

“I have dedicated 18 years of my life to the game, every day, without excuses,” Szczesny said.

“Today, although my body is still ready for challenges, my heart is no longer there. I feel that now is the time to give all my attention to my family.”
