Wingate University out of lockdown after shooting at baseball field

WINGATE, N.C. – Wingate University was placed on lockdown Friday evening after a shooting on the baseball field, according to the school’s alert system.

An alert went out around 8 p.m. that police were investigating a shooting at the university’s baseball field.

One person was taken into custody and police believe the shooting does not involve a member of the Wingate University community, the post on X said.

The lockdown was lifted around 8:25 p.m. and there is no longer a threat to the Wingate campus. Officials are asking everyone to avoid the area near the baseball field while police continue to investigate the incident.
