Wimbledon 2024 news LIVE: Andy Murray gives injury update and final build-up for tennis tournament

Andy Murray unsure of Wimbledon readiness after back injury at Queen’s

Andy Murray will play Tomas Machac in the first round of Wimbledon if the two-time champion is fit enough to take part in what is expected to be his final tournament at SW19. Murray took his place in the singles draw despite admitting he may not be ready to compete following spinal surgery. There could be updates on his condition at the tournament’s media day this afternoon.

Emma Raducanu will play 22nd seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the first round as the former US Open champion returns to SW19 after missing last year due to injury. First seed Katie Boulter opens against Tatjana Maria and could play Harriet Dart in round two. Similarly, British No. 1 Jack Draper opens against qualifier Elias Ymer and would face compatriot Cameron Norrie in the second round if both men win their opening matches.

The build-up to Wimbledon continues as women’s No. 1 Iga Swiatek and men’s No. 1 Jannik Sinner discuss their chances, while Marketa Vondrousova and Carlos Alcaraz are the defending singles champions. Novak Djokovic is seeded second as the 37-year-old attempts to win Wimbledon for the eighth time after a five-set defeat to Alcaraz in a thrilling men’s final last year.

Novak Djokovic set for record Wimbledon bid

Novak Djokovic starts his battle for his eighth Wimbledon title against Czech qualifier Vit Kopriva.

It is a favorable draw for Djokovic, who comes to Wimbledon after appearing to have recovered from knee surgery.

When asked about his chances this week, Djokovic said: “I didn’t come here to play a few rounds.

“If I know I can play close to my maximum or at maximum, then I play. If not, I give someone else the opportunity to play.

“I will only play if I know I am in a good enough state to go far in the tournament and fight for the title, so that is the condition.

“Rehab is going in the right direction every day, a few percent better and better. That gives me hope and courage to continue.

“I’m taking it easy. I’m not pushing myself 100 percent yet, but I hope that will happen in the coming days.”

Emma Raducanu faces tough opening draw for Wimbledon return

Emma Raducanu’s first Wimbledon match in two years is against 22nd-seeded Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova.

The former US Open champion missed last year’s tournament due to surgery on both wrists and an ankle, but showed good form in the run-up to the match.

However, it is quite a tough draw as Alexandrova reached the fourth round last year.

British number one Katie Boulter, seeded for the first time at the All England Club, opens her campaign against former semi-finalist Tatjana Maria and could face compatriot Harriet Dart in the second round, while fifth seed Jessica Pegula looms in round three.

Dart will face Chinese qualifier Bai Zhuoxuan, while Francesca Jones is likely to face world number one Iga Swiatek if she can get past Croatian Petra Martic.

Andy Murray gets potential Wimbledon boost after draw reveals first round opponent

Murray, 37, has lost twice to Machac this year, including in a final-set tiebreak in Miami, where the former world No. 1 suffered an ankle ligament injury that kept him out of action for six weeks.

But with Murray ending up bottom of the draw, the news that the two-time Wimbledon champion will not play on Tuesday was a bonus to his chances of being fit enough to compete. With defending Carlos Alcaraz taking his place in the top half of the draw and opening play on Center Court on Monday, the bottom half of the draw follows on Tuesday.

Murray is willing to wait until the last minute before making a decision on whether to play singles while he recovers from surgery on a cyst in his spine, but a Tuesday start in singles will give Murray more time to develop his assess the situation. He has taken a wildcard alongside brother Jamie Murray for the doubles event, which starts later in the first week.
