Wimbledon 2024 LIVE: Tennis scores and latest results as Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz return today

Andy Murray gives health update ahead of Wimbledon decision

Emma Raducanu is back at Wimbledon today, taking on Elise Mertens for a place in the third round at SW19.

Carlos Alcaraz, who started the second round on Monday in first place and thus defended his title, now moves to court 1 to face Australian Aleksandar Vukic.

On Tuesday night, British world number one Jack Draper embraced the spotlight left by Andy Murray after he withdrew from the men’s singles due to injury, recording a gritty five-set victory over qualifier Elias Ymer under the roof on Centre Court. While Murray, who was due to play Tomas Machac in the first round, will now turn his attention to the men’s doubles with his brother Jamie in what is his Wimbledon swansong.

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner is also back today, in an all-Italian match with former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini, while Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka also take to the court.

Cameron Norrie returns to winning streak with straight sets success at Wimbledon

Cameron Norrie put aside his recent grass-court woes to effortlessly reach the second round of Wimbledon with a three-set win over tournament debutant Facundo Diaz Acosta.

The unseeded 28-year-old entered Court Three looking to regain the form that saw him reach the semi-finals at the All England Club in 2022.

He responded to his critics after first-round exits at Queen’s and Eastbourne – having suffered a similar fate at the French Open – with a 7-5 7-5 6-3 victory to earn a second-round clash with British number one Jack Draper.

Marketa Vondrousova joins Steffi Graf in unwanted Wimbledon history

Vondrousova was a surprise winner at the All England Club last year and returned to Centre Court on Tuesday to defend her title, but struggled physically and suffered a 6-4 6-2 defeat in 67 minutes.

In doing so, Vondrousova became only the second reigning Wimbledon women’s champion to be eliminated in the first round, after Graf was eliminated by Lori McNeil in 1994.

Wimbledon 2024: Novak Djokovic praises Andy Murray, announces return in 2025

“It is obviously very sad news for the tournament and for the tennis world that he has withdrawn from the singles tournament here at Wimbledon,” said the Serb.

“Hopefully he gets another chance at Wimbledon next year with singles. Knowing him, he’s going to try.

“Just incredible resilience throughout his career. Multiple Grand Slam winner. Legend of the game. Number one in the world. That he’s going to play the Challenger circuit to improve his ranking on clay, his least favorite surface, says a lot about his character.

“Just a huge inspiration to all the players. Doesn’t matter being on the pitch for hours every day. Incredibly professional. His approach alone is something to study, that’s for sure.

“His will to push and see how far he can go, even with an artificial hip, is something that is just inspiring, but also a great example, I think, for a lot of athletes, the younger ones, who start to complain about this and that.”

Jacob Fearnley ‘super excited’ about Wimbledon clash with Novak Djokovic

British wildcard player Jacob Fearnley will embrace the special experience of playing against Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon after his three-set victory over Alejandro Moro Canas secured a second-round draw with the 24-time Grand Slam champion.

Fearnley only ended his five-year stint at Texas Christian University (TCU) in May and was outside the top 500 until winning an ATP Challenger event in Nottingham as a qualifier last month.

It earned the 22-year-old Scot a wildcard into this year’s championships and despite being distracted by Djokovic’s score on a screen outside Centre Court, he celebrated his All England Club debut with a 7-5 6-4 7-6 (12) victory on a lively Court Eight.

Andy Murray withdraws from Wimbledon singles after back surgery

Andy Murray has withdrawn from Wimbledon singles ahead of his first-round match against Tomas Machac, but the 37-year-old will make his farewell appearance at the championships, partnering his older brother Jamie in the doubles.

“Unfortunately, despite Andy having worked incredibly hard on his recovery since his surgery just over a week ago, he has made the very difficult decision not to play in singles this year,” Murray’s team said in a statement.

Jack Draper steps into the Wimbledon hole as Andy Murray leaves the spotlight

Under the roof on Centre Court, the symbolism felt a little too obvious. As Andy Murray left the stage, forced to withdraw on the morning of his final Wimbledon singles match, in stepped Jack Draper, the new British No. 1. And while a laborious, often unconvincing five-set victory over qualifier Elias Ymer hardly felt like the triumphant start of a new era for British tennis at Wimbledon, it did suggest something else. The Centre Court crowd had come to see Murray – Draper himself said so – but they nevertheless saw a display of heart and determination from the 22-year-old. As Murray proved countless times during his golden years, success at Wimbledon is built on such qualities.

It may have been a fitting tribute to his idol, but when Draper hit a final serve wide on match point and drove a ball high into the rafters of Centre Court, it was a victory greeted with more relief and frustration than outright celebration. It was clear that a deciding fifth set was not the plan for the 29th-seeded Draper, who was expected to beat an opponent ranked outside the world’s top 200 and who had played just two tour-level matches this year. He will be aiming higher after making his return in the second round against former British No. 1 and Wimbledon semi-finalist Cameron Norrie.

But it’s not easy to follow the departure of the two-time British champion and literally step into the void left by a legend of the sport. “I wouldn’t be here without Andy,” Draper said on Centre Court. “Such a man off the court, such a genuine man, such a kind man, what a champion and what a competitor.” And yet here he was, stepping into those shoes. In what was a defining moment in his young career, faced with heightened expectations and an opponent with nothing to lose, Draper emerged with a fighting victory to build on over the coming fortnight.
