Will Messi play against New England tonight?

Lionel Messi and Inter Miami will aim to break Major League Soccer’s points record in today’s match against New England Revolution. The match kicks off at 6:00 PM ET (7:00 PM in Argentina) at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Messi is expected to play but will come off the bench, while his former Barcelona running mates Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba are in the starting line-up.

It’s MLS Decision Day, also known as the last day of the 2024 regular season. Two more teams will enter the MLS Cup Playoff field from the Eastern Conference, while the entire Western Conference will learn how to play after today’s games have positioned themselves.

Inter Miami has already won the MLS Supporters’ Shield for best record and is the No. 1 seed in the playoffs. But today’s match is about making history in the competition.

With a win, Inter Miami has 74 points from the 2024 season. It would eclipse New England’s current mark of 73 points in 2021.

Messi will play but there is a good chance he will come off the bench on Saturday, Inter Miami coach Tata Martino said on Friday.

Here is the latest news about Messi

Messi has just returned from international duty, where he scored a hat-trick with two assists in Argentina’s 6-0 win over Bolivia last Tuesday. Argentina also settled for a 1-1 draw in Venezuela on October 10.

Messi has made a total of seven appearances and scored eight goals since his return on September 14 after a right ankle ligament injury in the Copa America final that sidelined him for two months.

Will Messi play in the 2026 World Cup?

Messi has not yet committed to playing for reigning champions Argentina at the next World Cup.

“I’m not getting ahead of myself. I try to enjoy day to day. When the time comes, we will see,” Messi said of the next World Cup after receiving the MARCA America Award on Thursday.

“I don’t like to speed up time or look ahead. I try to enjoy every day. I hope I can continue playing at this level so I can feel good and happy. If I can do what I like, I’m happy. I value that more than reaching the 2026 tournament. I have not set a goal to reach the World Cup, but more to live from day to day and be healthy.”

Who will Inter Miami face in the MLS Playoffs?

Inter Miami’s first playoff match is on October 25 and the opponent has yet to be determined. It will play the winner of the Eastern Conference wild-card game on Oct. 22 between the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds in the playoff picture.

No. No. 8 DC United, No. 9 CF Montréal, No. 11 Philadelphia Union and No. 12 Atlanta United will battle for the final two playoff spots on MLS Decision Day Saturday. No. 10 Toronto is eliminated.
