Will Marcus Freeman leave for the NFL? Here’s his take on the rumors

Major football’s annual coaching carousel is about to strike and Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman’s name has been thrown into the fold.

Freeman was mentioned by both ESPN and NFL Network as a potential name to watch as more NFL jobs open up. In his final media appearance Thursday before Notre Dame takes on undefeated Army, Freeman was asked about the rumors.

Marcus Freeman on potentially taking on a head coaching job in the NFL

Freeman was asked Thursday about a possible move to the NFL.

“I try not to waste time thinking about an uncertain future,” Freeman said.

He also said the mention of his name is a result of the success of Notre Dame’s football program and that he hasn’t considered making the potential jump.

Nick Shepkowski’s quick take:

I’ve never looked at Marcus Freeman and really thought of him as an NFL head coach, but since he’s asked about it, let’s discuss it quickly.

Hiring quality assistants is perhaps the most important thing a head coach can do at any level, and if Freeman is performing well there today, that’s certainly a positive number.

He only has three years of head coaching experience, which says more of the opposite, even though the NFL hires many head coaches every year who have no head coaching experience at any level.

The main takeaway from Freeman’s response to me is that there is no clear ‘no’. Now, positioning themselves for an expansion at Notre Dame may be part of the reason, as we all know how negotiations work, but it’s now something to keep an eye on until it isn’t.
