Wide receiver from Riverside promises

play

Add another SEC commitment and one to the Big Ten in Jacksonville’s 2025 recruiting class.

Riverside wide receiver Tae’shaun Gelsey announced his commitment to Florida football, while fellow wideout Myles Kendrick committed to Indiana in the school gym on Saturday.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Gelsey chose the Gators over Auburn, Kentucky, Tulane, UCF and Wake Forest.

Ranked as a four-star prospect by Rivals and a three-star prospect by 247Sports and On3, Gelsey caught 48 passes for 859 yards and nine touchdowns as the Generals advanced to the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 2M playoffs.

Gelsey was also a top performer on the basketball court, averaging 13.3 points and 9.8 rebounds during the winter, earning All-First Coast recognition in both sports.

Also moving to the next level is Kendrick, who racked up 40 receptions for 710 yards and nine touchdowns during his junior year at Riverside. He had considered Colorado, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Michigan State, South Florida and Tulane. While Kendrick remains an unrated prospect for the national sites thus far, he has quickly increased his stock after a strong 2023 season.

Broughton zooms in on Zips

Akron is the destination for Fleming Island’s Cibastian Broughton after the rising senior quarterback committed to the Mid-American Conference school, selecting the Zips over Arkansas State, Syracuse and Tulane.

Broughton was a three-year starter and was considered a three-star prospect. In 2023, he surpassed the 1,000-yard mark as a rusher and passer, running for 1,094 yards and throwing for 1,627 yards.

His efforts continue to grow the list of quarterbacks for Northeast Florida’s Football Bowl Subdivision class of 2025, which includes Creekside’s Sean Ashenfelder (Rutgers), Bolles’ Ethan Drumm (Georgia State), St. Augustine’s Locklan Hewlett (USF) and Mandarin’s Tramell Jones (Florida State).

Beachside’s list of prospective college players is rounded out by Nigel Eldridge Jr., who has committed to Georgia Southern. The 6-3, 240-pound Eldridge also could be drafted as a powerful ball carrier.

In Fort White, athlete Mike Peterson Jr. selected Arkansas State. Peterson, the son of former Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker, played wide receiver at Gainesville Buchholz last year and caught 25 passes for 502 yards.

Stubbs ends contract with Trojans

The recruitment process for Hylton (Drake) Stubbs has reopened.

Mandarin’s rising senior safety has decommitted from Southern Cal, the latest high-profile recruit to back out of a commitment to the Trojans in recent months. He had previously committed to the school in March.

In a letter posted to Twitter/X, Stubbs wrote: “At this time I believe it is best to explore other options to ensure I find the perfect fit for my future, both academically and athletically. This journey is a valuable experience and I’m curious to see what the future has in store.”

The four-star safety, who is ranked among the nation’s top 10 at his position, has received more than two dozen other offers and visited both Florida and Miami in June.

During the 2023 season, Stubbs made 97 tackles (eight and a half for loss), with 2 1/2 sacks, six interceptions, three fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. He was especially dominant in the Class 4M semifinal against Coconut Creek Monarch, where he had three takeaways and scored a defensive touchdown.

Stubbs also won the Vertical Jump Challenge during Wednesday’s Rivals Five-Star Camp, held at the Jaguars’ Dream Finders Homes Flex Field.
