Why?

As most of you know, I’m not the kind of frontpager who feels the need to tell you when you’re wrong on the internet. However, that’s not to say I don’t have certain… frustrations with the comments section. The Thing aside, I’d like to remind everyone that if you had your way, Olympic Hero (TM) Scottie Scheffler would be in a highway chain gang on the outskirts of Louisville instead of in Paris, because the Louisville Police Department is, of course, an impeccable and infallible source of information. Anyway, here’s the kind of commentary I don’t find so much annoying as confusing:

Why?

I mean, why?

This is not an isolated example. Every time someone posts about a sport, a TV show, a movie, a book, or a musician, someone feels compelled to say, “I don’t like that show. I’ve never heard of it. I don’t even have a TV. I live in the woods with only my raccoon friends and my squirrel kids.”

I mean, why? When we write a post, we create a space for discussion on a given topic with the expectation that it will be shared by enthusiasts of that topic or at least those who are marginally interested in it. If you’ve never seen House of the Dragon, never heard of Jason Isbell, and don’t give a damn about the sport of baseball… why in the name of Jesus Tap-Dancing Christ would you even bother to comment on those threads???!?!? If the comments were off-topic, it would make some kind of sense, but to just show up to make it clear that you don’t care about the conversation people are having? I’m not even mad! I’m just confused!
