Why The Economist Endorses Political Candidates

IN THE PAST week two leading American newspapers, the Los Angeles Times and the WashingtonPostannounced that their editors would not endorse a candidate for the U.S. presidency. They argued that this would be less divisive and promote their independence. Today The Economist gave his own support to Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate. We have a long tradition of supporting candidates, in Britain, America and around the world – not as a break from independence, but as an example of it.
