Why Insider would lose confidence in Jaguars if they don’t make a big move

There is a lot of uncertainty for the Jacksonville Jaguars through eleven weeks.

Rumors have swirled time and time again regarding the short- and long-term status of head coach Doug Pederson and general manager Trent Baalke. Owner Shad Khan has remained quiet behind the scenes so far.

The broad expectation among the national media is that change will eventually come to the Jaguars. However, no one knows when or how, which leaves a lot of guesswork for those outside Khan’s close circle.

Among those investigating the state of the Jaguars today is Albert Breer, an insider and Sports Illustrated reporter. Breer recently took to social media to speak out about what changes the Jaguars could or could not make, and what it would mean for the perception of the future franchise.

“I mean, if Trent Baalke isn’t part of this, and I’ve heard the same rumblings as everyone else. That he could survive this. I mean, God help that franchise,” Breer said.

“I think it’s been the last six seasons as a general manager. He’s 30-64. He’s made the playoffs once. He survived the two shootings, the harbor fire and the Tomsula fire. So survived the shootout between Caldwell and Doug Marrone from somehow surviving the Urban Meyer year. Again, like I’d lose a lot of faith in the Khans if, if Trent Baalke somehow survives this, and Doug Pederson doesn’t. “

Baalke joined the Jaguars in 2020 and played a role in the Dave Caldwell-led front office as the team’s director of player personnel. When Caldwell was fired in November, Baalke was named interim general manager thanks to his experience in the role with the San Francisco 49ers.

Baalke then became full-time general manager in 2021, the same offseason the Jaguars hired Urban Meyer as head coach. Meyer was such an unmitigated disaster in his own right that Baalke’s job remained safe throughout the season, with Baalke staying on as general manager when Doug Pederson was hired as head coach in 2022.

There were questions about retaining Baalke in 2022, and rumors persisted that his role in the franchise could deter some candidates for the head coaching role. If Khan keeps Baalke in the role after leaving Pederson, he could see the same questions arise.
