Why Agatha Harkness had to meet that shocking fate in the MCU

Agatha All Around showrunner Jac Schaeffer has finally revealed why the series had to end in such a shocking and surprising way for the title character.

Agatha Harkness was introduced in WandaVision as an MCU villain and certainly did some mean things in the nine episodes of her own superhero show.

But no one saw what would happen at the end of the series, where over the course of a two-part finale, we learned about her tragic past, leading to Agatha’s equally tragic present.

To talk about the character’s fate and the reasons for it, we now have to go into detail, so take care SPOILERS AHEAD

As the climax approached, Agatha finally did the right thing: sacrifice herself so Billy Maiximoff could live. This resulted in her character appearing as a ghost to Billy during the climax.

Head writer and showrunner Jac Schaeffer has now spoken about how Agatha’s story got there at The Hollywood Reporter, with that spirit always being part of the plan.

“We knew she was going to die because we knew we wanted her to be a ghost,” Schaeffer explains. “Point A got Agatha out of Wanda’s spell, and Point B of the show turned her into a ghost/Billy’s spirit guide. Those were the poles of the show that we were all committed to, and so there was no pushback on the kiss of death.

“It’s the death knell of the great Marvel battle, but it’s also the culmination of this romantic relationship. Those two things came together in a way that felt good for all the creative people on the show, and there wasn’t much pushback.

Agatha in Agatha all the time

Indeed, both death as a concept, and death as a character – played by Aubrey Plaza – cast a significant shadow over the proceedings, with Scheffer adding: “I really wanted to explore, in the scope of things, this little idea that Agatha is a would have a son. who died, something so simple and so human. And if we did, we wouldn’t be able to play fast and loose with all the other deaths.

“The fact that we then introduced Death as a character felt like it was our job to do a more honest exploration of death and how people fulfill their purpose and the sustainability of that. So it wasn’t my reaction to the landscape, but I did see it as an opportunity to do something unexpected.

“People are used to expecting a good and happy ending, and we wrote that too, but it felt unfair. So we went for the real thing.”
