Reigning champions Argentina will face Ecuador on Thursday at the NRG Stadium in Houston, with a place in the semi-finals of the 2024 Copa America at stake.

The Albiceleste have won all three of their matches to top Group A in the opening stages of this tournament, having conceded no goals in the three matches and winning their most recent match 2-0 against Peru.

Ecuador, meanwhile, finished level with Mexico on four points after the teams drew 0-0 in the Group B final, with Felix Sanchez’s side claiming a place in the knockout stages thanks to their superior goal difference.

It is the second time in a row that La Tri have qualified for the last eight of this tournament, having reached the quarter-finals in three of the previous four Copa America events.

Argentina recorded a narrow 1-0 victory over Ecuador in preparation for the tournament, while the most recent Copa America meeting between the two resulted in a 3-0 victory in the round of 16 of the 2021 edition.

Argentina vs Ecuador expected lineups and team news

The main talking point ahead of Argentina’s Copa America quarter-final against Ecuador on Thursday will be the talisman Lionel Messi‘S fitness. It was no great surprise that the 37-year-old Inter Miami star was forced to miss the match against Peru after requiring treatment in Argentina’s second leg against Chile. He even admitted after the match that he had felt “some discomfort” in his right hamstring.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner and 2022 world champion has been training hard this week and there is every confidence that Messi will demonstrate his fitness in time for the match in Houston.

Scaloni also gave players like Alexis Mac Allister, Rodrigo De Paul And Julian Alvarez for the 2-0 win over Peru on Matchday 3 on Saturday. They should all be back in the starting line-up for this match.

Angel of Mary regained his place in the starting line-up last time, while Nicolas Tagliafico was the only defender to keep his place, and Nahuel Molina, Christian Romero And Lisandro Martinez should be reunited with him here in a defense of four.

With four goals so far in this competition, including two against Peru, the Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez will lead Argentina’s attack against Ecuador, flanked by Alvarez and Messi.

Expected line-up Argentina (4-3-3, from right to left): E. Martinez (GK) — Molina, Romero, Li. Martinez, Tagliafico — Di Maria, De Paul, Mac Allister — Messi, La. Martinez, Alvarez.

After missing their previous meeting through suspension, Ecuador’s all-time leading scorer Within Valencia played the full 90 against Mexico, with John Jeboah make way. He will be the man to make the difference as he looks to add to his international tally of 41 goals against the world champions.

Kendry Paez is an attacking force from midfield for Ecuador. He is very positive with the ball and uses his exciting burst of speed to get past defenders. Jeremy Sarmiento‘S his athleticism makes him a problem for the back line, while Alan Minda is another promising young impact player.

Defensive midfielder Moses Caicedo and defender Piero Hincapie create a strong backbone for the team.

Expected line-up Ecuador (4-2-3-1, from right to left): Dominguez (GK) — Preciado, Torres, Pacho, Hincapie — Franco, M. Caicedo — Minda, Paez, Sarmiento — Valencia.

Argentina vs Ecuador Prediction

  • Score prediction: Argentina 2-1 Ecuador

Ecuador have enough talent to trouble Argentina and are capable of putting their opponents under pressure, but expect the Albiceleste to put in a performance that shows they are on course to defend their Copa America title.

Argentina have enough players who can make the difference at the right time and who will ultimately do enough to beat Ecuador.
