“What Wout did is amazing. What Remco did is really special” – Jose de Cauwer expects great things from Belgian duo in Olympic road race after impressive time trial

In the individual time trial at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Belgium doubled its medal haul as Remco Evenepoel secured the gold medal and Wout van Aert finished third to take bronze. With the road race taking place next Saturday, August 3, Belgian cycling expert Jose de Cauwer’s hopes for another gold medal are growing.

“We know that those two guys can organize a time trial. They have proven that in the past. But it was with a small heart that I started to believe in it,” the very experienced De Cauwer reflects on Sporza afterwards. “What Wout did is great. What Remco did is really special.”

That he was able to combine his podium finish in his debut in the Tour de France with a gold medal at the Olympic Games is a great compliment for Evenepoel, De Cauwer believes. “Especially because Remco rode the Tour until the last day. In the penultimate stage he got a slap on the face and in the final time trial he might have thought he would do a bit better,” he estimates. “Then he pressed the reset button to win here. That is very special.”

In terms of individual time trials, Evenepoel now has a Belgian national title, a European title, a World Championship, victories in all major tours and the new Olympic gold to his name. “In current cycling, Remco is the absolute top. Pogacar did not participate yesterday, but I think he could not have beaten Remco on that course,” says De Cauwer. “Remco is Remco. When he starts time trials and races like San Sebastian and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, it is almost always a blast. Watch out next Saturday. There is no one who can ride faster on the flat than Remco Evenepoel.”

The men’s road race will take place on Saturday, in which Evenepoel, Van Aert, Tiesj Benoot and Jasper Stuyven will lead the Belgian attack on the road to another gold medal at the Olympic Games.
