What should Celtics fans think of the latest report on Jeff Bezos?

How Should Celtics Fans Feel About Latest Jeff Bezos Report? originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

That’s not surprising, because Jeff Bezos is a big favorite with the Boston Celtics.

Bill Simmons of The Ringer reported on his podcast Sunday that there was “legitimate buzz” about the Amazon founder and multibillionaire buying a majority stake in the Celtics. Just two days later, however, Nick Wingfield of The Information reported that Bezos has “no plans” to bid on the Celtics and that there is “zero truth” to Simmons’ speculation.

So, is this development good or bad news for the Celtics, as Wyc Grousbeck looks to find a new majority owner for the franchise? Should fans want a deep-pocketed, big-spending outsider like Bezos, or would it be better if Bezos’ apparent disinterest opens the door for a local connection like Steve Pagliuca, who is part of the current ownership group that just brought Banner 18 to Boston?

From a purely entertainment perspective, Boston Sports Tonight co-host Michael Felger wanted Bezos to stay in the race.

“I’m fascinated by this story and as a media pundit and a talk show host in this city, I’m disappointed that Bezos is out,” Felger told co-host Michael Holley on Tuesday night’s episode of BST, as seen in the video player above.

“What an interesting story. Jeff Bezos, he’s an outsider. Has he ever had anything to do with Boston? Talk about the ultimate (outsider) coming in here with all this Amazon filth, like, ‘I’m taking over the Celtics, I’m building the Amazon Dome, and if you don’t like it, too bad. I’m Jeff Bezos.'”

Simmons theorized on his podcast that if Bezos, the second-richest person in the world according to Forbes, were to buy the team, he could use his vast fortune to build a futuristic new Celtics arena, following the example of Steve Ballmer and the Los Angeles Clippers with the Intuit Dome.

Building a new stadium in Boston, however, would be easier said than done. The Celtics recently signed a 15-year lease to play games at the TD Garden through the 2035-36 season. That could be one reason why Bezos is reportedly backing out of buying the team.

Still, Felger wanted Bezos to at least make an effort to approach the Celtics so discussions could begin about the future of the franchise.

“You never really hear from this guy, and yet he’s going to own the Celtics? He’s going to come to Boston and own the building?” Felger said. “It would be so fascinating to watch him try, and the fact that he’s out, as a media guy, it’s disappointing to me.

“We’re all rooting for Pagliuca. I think that would be a great outcome on many levels. I’m just saying it would be great if Bezos came here and took over. … He’s building a new arena to compete with the Garden? That’s fun stuff.”

Felger’s co-host Tony Massarotti of 98.5 The Sports Hub recently suggested that John Henry of Fenway Sports Group is not interested in buying the Celtics. At this time, no other interested parties besides Pagliuca have come forward.

However, there is still plenty of time to change this.
