Thanksgiving, a holiday rooted in healing a bitterly divided nation, falls much later in November this year. Traditionally it is celebrated with lots of food, football games and a parade that welcomes the approaching winter holiday season.

Every year, Thanksgiving attracts a lot of attention and Google searches. Here’s a look at what people want to know about the holiday in 2024.

When is Thanksgiving 2024?

Thursday, November 28 is the date of Thanksgiving this year.

When did Thanksgiving become a national holiday?

President Abraham Lincoln declared a national Thanksgiving holiday in 1863. It was a gesture, historians say, meant to reconcile a deeply divided country in the midst of civil war.

Lincoln was not the first president to issue a Thanksgiving proclamation; George Washington did so in 1789. However, Lincoln’s order set a precedent for celebrating Thanksgiving on the last Thursday in November.

Why is Thanksgiving so late this year?

Thanksgiving is traditionally celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, but that wasn’t always the case.

Believe it or not, the US once celebrated two Thanksgivings because of politics

According to the National Archives, President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving up a week in 1939 to boost retail sales during the Great Depression. Sixteen states refused to accept the change, and Thanksgiving was celebrated on two different dates for two years. The decision, dubbed “Franksgiving” by Roosevelt’s opponents, proved so unpopular that the president signed a bill in 1941 making Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday in November.

When was the first Thanksgiving and why do we celebrate it?

The early history of Thanksgiving dates back to the fall of 1621 in Massachusetts, but historians note that there are several misconceptions about what it looked like.

Some Americans cling to a romanticized version of Thanksgiving, in which the Pilgrims invited Native Americans to share a bountiful meal. That’s not entirely true, historians say, and it’s one of many myths about Thanksgiving that paint a deceptively rosy story, often ignoring how indigenous people suffered from death, disease, slavery or forced relocation through white European settlers.

The Pilgrims did celebrate a three-day harvest festival in 1621, experts say, but there are no records of the Wampanoag tribe in Massachusetts receiving an official invitation to the festival, according to the National Endowment for the Humanities. Instead, they may have crashed it.

The Wampanoags, historians believe, arrived ready for battle after hearing the Pilgrims fire their guns into the air during the festivities. Historical documents record 90 members of the tribe, led by Chief Massasoit, who then decided to stay for the celebration. Later they brought the pilgrims five deer to put venison on the menu.

Whatever peace they enjoyed did not last long.

Relations between the two parties deteriorated in the 1770s, leading to bloodshed. At one point, the severed head of Massasoit’s son was mounted on a pike outside Plymouth Colony. Today, not all Native Americans celebrate Thanksgiving.

Was turkey always on the menu at Thanksgiving?

According to History.com, turkey was not on the menu at the Pilgrim’s Fall Festival. Instead, they would likely have eaten local seafood such as mussels, lobster and sea bass. The Wampanoag also brought deer and fruits, including squash.

How long has pumpkin pie been a traditional part of Thanksgiving?

Pumpkin pie was a staple on New England Thanksgiving tables as early as the turn of the century. Legend has it that the town of Colchester, Connecticut, postponed its Thanksgiving celebration for a week in 1705 due to a molasses shortage, according to history.com.
