What are the Olympic venues during Paris 2024?

From a unique, groundbreaking opening ceremony to beach volleyball under the Eiffel Tower and, of course, surfing in Tahiti: Paris 2024 will be an Olympic Games like no other.

With a history dating back to Roman times, the City of Light is full of iconic monuments, many of which feature on the Paris 2024 events calendar.

To whet your appetite, we will discuss the special locations where the Games will take place:

Aquatics

The five different water disciplines are spread over three locations. The futuristic Paris La Defense Arenabest known as the home of rugby team Racing 92, is being converted into a swimming pool complex that will host both the swimming competitions and the water polo finals.

Then, towards Saint Denis and the Stade de France, the newly built Swimming pool in Paris is the place for the preliminary rounds of diving, synchronized swimming and water polo.

And last but not least, the Pont d’Iénaoverlooking the Eiffel Tower, is the best spot in the house to watch the marathon swimming competition.

Archery

In the 7th arrondissement of Paris, The Disabled is the military heart of the city, with the Musée de l’Armée and the tomb of Napoléon Bonaparte. Archery takes place here, on the Esplanade des Invalides opposite the Hôtel des Invalides.

Athletics

The Stadium of France has become one of the world’s most iconic stadiums in the 25 years since it was first built for the 1998 FIFA World Cup. It has hosted the Athletics World Championships and Rugby Championships, and will now be the venue for the Paris Athletics Championships.

Meanwhile, the marathon will start at the Town Halleast to Versailles, after which the route takes runners back to the Invalides.

The race walking takes place on the Pont d’Iéna near the Eiffel Tower.

Badminton

The brand new Arena of the Porte de la Chapellein the north of the city, was built especially for the Games and the eco-design venue will host the badminton competition.

Basketball

The Olympic basketball competition features some of the world’s most famous athletes. The preliminary round takes place outside Paris, in Lille. Pierre Mauroy Stadiumwhile the finals will then take place on Bercy Arena.

Meanwhile, the exciting 3×3 competition is being held in Place de la Concordeat the end of the Champs-Élysées, in the shadow of the Obelisk monument.

Boxing

The boxing competition will be divided over two locations. The preliminary rounds and the quarter finals will take place at the Arena Paris Northa convention center near Charles de Gaulle airport. Then the focus will shift to Roland Garros for the final.

Break

The only new sport at Paris 2024, breaking, will make its debut in an iconic location as it will be held in Place de la Concordelike the 3×3 basketball.

Canoeing

Both the canoe sprint and the canoe slalom take place approximately 30 km from the city centre at the National Olympic Nautical Stadium on the Île de Loisirs de Vaires-Torcy, near Charles de Gaulle airport.

Cycling

Four different locations will host cycling races during Paris 2024, starting with Place de la Concordewhere you can go for BMX freestyle.

The road race starts and ends at the Trocadero just across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower, with the time trial starting at 7pm The Disabledeast to the Bois de Vincennes and then back to the Pont Alexandre III.

The other three cycling disciplines will be slightly outside the city, towards Saint Quentin-en-YvelinesThe Vélodrome there has twice hosted the Track Cycling World Championships and will be the venue for the track cycling, while the BMX races will take place next door at the BMX stadium. And Élancourt Hill, which is very close by, will be the venue for the mountain biking.

Rider

The equestrian competition will take place at another iconic location, namely the Palace of Versailles forms the backdrop. The former royal residence is located about 20 km west of the city and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world.

Fence

The Great Palacelocated on the Champs-Élysées, it was built for the Paris World’s Fair in 1900. It is currently being renovated and will host the fencing competition, after previously hosting the World Fencing Championships in 2010.

Field hockey

History will be written on the Yves du Manoir Stadium in Colombes, the only venue to host an Olympic event for the second time. The opening ceremony and athletics were held here in 1924, while a century later field hockey will move to the stadium north of the city.

Football

The 2024 Paris football competition will be held across France, with the final set taking place in the Parc des Princeshome ground of Paris Saint-Germain. Other matches are played in Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Saint-Étienne, Nantes and Nice.

golf

Six years after hosting the Ryder Cup, the first time the competition ever took place in France, The Golf National will be the venue for the golf in Paris. It is located in Guyancourt, near Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines.

Gymnastics

Gymnastics in Paris will take place in two locations, with the Arena of the Porte de la Chapelle used for rhythmic gymnastics.

The artistic gymnastics and trampoline events are held in the Bercy Arena.

Handball

The Paris 2024 handball competitions will kick off in one of the most versatile locations, with the preliminary rounds taking place at the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles.The finals then move east to Lille and the Pierre Mauroy Stadium.

Judo

Now that the Grand Palais is being renovated for the Games, Grand Palace Éphémère opened in 2021. Previously, the 10th edition of the forum for wood technicians and architects took place here and judo takes place in Paris.

Modern Pentathlon

The modern pentathlon can trace its history back to Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games. In Paris, the fencing competitions take place in the Arena Paris North, while the other disciplines are all in Versailles.

Rowing

As with the two canoeing disciplines, rowing in Paris 2024 will take place in the National Olympic Nautical Stadium in Île de loisirs de Vaires-Torcy.

Rugby sevens

In addition to athletics and the closing ceremony, there is another sport on the program. Stadium of France will be the rugby sevens. A year after hosting both the opening match and the final of the Rugby World Cup, some of the great and the good of the oval ball game will return to Saint Denis.

The sailing

For Olympic sailing, attention turns south MarseilleThe city known for its Vieux Port and as the setting for The Count of Monte Cristo will compete in the battle between sailors in the Mediterranean.

To shoot

Located a few hours away from Paris, the National Shooting Center Châteauroux will be the location for the 2024 filming.

Skateboarding

It’s back to Place de la Concorde for skateboarding, three years after Sky Brown became Team GB’s youngest ever Olympic medallist.

Sport climbing

Sport climbers flock to the commune northeast of Paris The Bourget Five climbing walls are used, two for warm-up and three outdoor walls for competitions.

Surf

The most exotic event of the Games is undoubtedly the surfing, which takes place all the way to the Pacific Ocean and the French Polynesian islands of Tahiti. Theehupo’owhere the competition takes place is a regular stop on the World Surf League Championship Tour.

Table tennis

Table tennis in Paris is another sport that is popular in the Paris Expo Porte de Versailles.

Taekwondo

It’s back to the Great Palace for taekwondo, with the sport also to be practiced at this location later during the Games, after being devoted to fencing at an early stage.

Tennis

Another iconic location for tennis, which will be played on the red clay courts of Roland GarrosThe clay court specialists, who organize Roland Garros every year, want to win Olympic medals in addition to their Grand Slam victory.

Triathlon

We return to the city centre for a triathlon, swimming across the Seine, followed by cycling and running routes along the Champs-Élysées, before finishing at the Bridge Alexander III.

Volley-ball

The volleyball competition will be different Paris Expo Porte de Versailles, while beach volleyball is perhaps the most notable of all the locations. The Eiffel Tower Stadium is located beneath the most visited monument in the world and provides a breathtaking backdrop for the competition.

Weightlifting

The last of the four sports organized on Paris Expo Porte de Versailles in the 15th arrondissement there is weightlifting.

Wrestling

Last but not least, wrestling will join judo in the Great Palace Éphémère.

Ceremonies

Paris 2024 will be tearing up the rule book when it comes to its opening ceremony. Rather than being confined to a stadium, the plan is to bring the ceremony to the heart of the city, with the athletes’ parade taking place on the River Seine, past iconic sites such as Notre Dame and the Louvre. Eighty giant screens will be set up across the capital to give everyone a chance to enjoy the show, with the final elements of the show taking place in the Trocadéro in front of a mini stadium seating 30,000 people. The closing ceremony will take a more traditional form at the Stade de France.
