We Are Washington Closes Juneteenth in Style with Basketball Tournament | Community

TEXARKANA, Ark. – “We Are Washington” ended its month-long Juneteenth celebration in style today by honoring one of its own, Terry Rogers, with a basketball game and activities.

The Scholars sponsored this morning’s game at the Washington Community Development Center in Texarkana, Arkansas, where Rogers had his own courtside seat for the game.

Rogers said he was happy to be there and that he is taking it day by day.

In 1978, Rogers began his 36-year career at the Boys and Girls Club, serving as the club’s assistant director for 25 years.

Current basketball player Jamal Ray said the fundraiser is for Terry Roberts and that they do this for him every year.

“He actually had more of an impact on my father and my older uncles and my early years, when I was between five and 10,” Ray said. “He made sure everyone was disciplined and on the same page and helped everyone become a man.”

Rogers had worked with some of the young men who played basketball, and as always, he created a safe haven for them and continued to work to keep them safe and grow into respectable men.
