WBC bans Ryan Garcia after racist tirade on X Spaces

Ryan Garcia’s story seems to get worse every day.

On Thursday, July 4, the 25-year-old was removed from all ties with his organization by WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman after a profane and racist tirade on X Spaces.

Sulaiman went to X to announce his decision and he indicated that he was concerned about Garcia’s well-being in terms of his mental health and possible “substance abuse” issues.

Here is Sulaiman’s message.

I asked Sulaiman for further comment via text message and he added:

“I am concerned for his life and it is extremely urgent that someone takes the right action.”

Garcia’s tirade contained several disturbing passages, including one that used racial slurs against black people and referenced police brutality victim George Floyd.

Garcia said, “I hate n******, I’m anti-black, I’m the KKK. Hey, let’s bring George Floyd back to life and kill that n***** again.”

As disturbing as this tirade was, it was just another example of the young fighter’s wild and unpredictable behavior.

Garcia filled the lead-up to his April fight with Devin Haney with manic social media posts and erratic behavior, leaving many unsure whether Garcia was trolling or showing real signs of mental health issues.

The Golden Boy player was underweight for the bout, which earned him further criticism from those questioning whether he was ready for the fight with Haney.

However, Garcia appeared to have the final say over all critics as he secured a unanimous decision victory over Haney, knocking the champion down twice in the fight.

In a twist, the fight was declared a no contest after Garcia tested positive for banned substances before and after the Haney fight. Garcia’s B sample was also dirty, and as a result, he was suspended from boxing for one year by the New York State Athletic Commission.

Following the fight with Haney, Garcia was also arrested in June on suspicion of vandalism at the Beverly Hills Waldorf Astoria hotel.

Following the latest outburst, Garcia took to social media and showed no remorse for his words earlier in the day. Instead, he invited people to “come and try him.”

Garcia’s parents released a statement condemning their son’s words and making it clear that they do not share the views he expressed in his tirade. They also cited an “ongoing struggle with mental health” in their statement.

Former Dallas Cowboys star Dez Bryant responded to X after listening to Garcia’s tirade:

Former boxer Ishe Smith was particularly critical of Garcia for his behavior:

Former super middleweight champion Caleb Plant echoed Smith’s sentiments:

The WBC’s decision is understandable, as there must be some accountability for such negative behavior. It is unclear how or if this latest issue will affect Garcia’s ability to fight in the future.
