Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 Marches To Huge Steam Record

Warhammer 40K Space Marines 2 has achieved a huge Steam record after a successful release, setting a new standard for the War hammer franchise.

A staggering 135,000 concurrent players on Steam during the early access period showed the game’s potential. As reported by VG247, a significant jump occurred upon its full release on September 9, peaking at over 235,000 concurrent players.

Space Marine 2 is the best-selling game on Steam, dethroning the other games. Black Myth Wukong from its spot, and the number of over 235,000 concurrent players on Steam has set the record for games in the War hammer franchise. The record was previously just under 167,000, set by Total War: Warhammer 3 two years ago.

These numbers are just the tip of the iceberg, however, as they don’t account for console players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That could push concurrent player counts even further, though we won’t know the full details until sales data is released.

Space Marine 2’s excellent performance shows that board games turned into video games have huge potential. The biggest example was Baldurs Gate 3 in 2023, based on Dungeons and Dragons.

It opens the door for other developers to follow suit with their spin on an established series, potentially distancing themselves from the push to launch their own IPs in a crowded market. The advantage of choosing a franchise as a War hammer, for example, is an existing audience.

The signs are very promising for Space Marine 2, and there’s more to come. The post-launch roadmap shows new Operations, armor, and more arriving over the course of the next year.
