VVS Laxman named as Tanvir Ahmed makes ‘parchi’ allegations against Gautam Gambhir over his appointment as head coach

Former Pakistani cricketer Tanvir Ahmed fired shots at Gautam Gambhir after he was appointed as the head coach of the Indian national cricket team. He said that the former Indian opener has been included in the team on the basis of ‘parchi’. ‘Parchi’ means ‘receipt’, but among cricket fans it is often used pejoratively. When used in this context, it implies that someone has been selected not on the basis of their performance, but through favouritism or other non-merit-based reasons.

India National Cricket Team entered a new era after the 2024 T20 World Cup. Rahul Dravid’s tenure as the head coach ended and it paved the way for BCCI to bring in the new coach. They subsequently appointed Gautam Gambhir in the role till the 2027 World Cup.

Since the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, there have been a lot of talks surrounding the Indian head coach. This came after Rahul Dravid did not agree to continue his tenure as the head coach. There were a lot of rumours about the same and the biggest name that came up since then was Gautam Gambhir.

Gautam Gambhir’s position became even stronger when Kolkata Knight Riders won the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 under his guidance. In the past few seasons, the franchise had struggled to get going but Gambhir’s presence changed the fortunes of the team.

Apart from Gautam Gambhir, there were quite a few names floating around for the head coach. VVS Laxman was also one of the names that was talked about. This was because when Rahul Dravid and his coaching staff were rested, the NCA chief was the head coach of the team.

But VVS Laxman is said not to have expressed his desire to take over as head coach. There were even reports that along with Gautam Gambhir, WV Raman was also interviewed by the BCCI for the post but the Kolkata Knight Riders mentor was preferred and roped in.

Gautam Gambhir has not coached any team yet and this will be his first stint as a coach of a team. He has played the role of mentor in the Indian Premier League. The former Indian captain was the mentor of Lucknow Super Giants for two years and this year also played the same role at KKR.

When Gautam Gambhir was appointed as the head coach of the Indian team, Tanvir Ahmed was not happy with the decision. He said that VVS Laxman should have been appointed as the head coach as he has been with the team for a long time. He explained on his Twitter account:

“VVS Laxman ko indian team ka head caoch hona chahiye tha kyun k woh india B k sath kafi time say head coach kam kar raha ha lagta ha Gautham Gambhir parchi par aya ha. (Freely translated to – VVS Laxman should have been the head coach of the Indian team as he worked with the Indian B team for a long time. It feels like Gautam Gambhir was not selected on merit.”

Gautam Gambhir’s first assignment as head coach of Team India is the upcoming Sri Lanka tour. The team will take on the island nation in the three-match T20I and three-match ODI series, starting on July 27.
