Voters give Harris the win in the debate, but praise Trump for his policies: She got under his skin

Fox News Digital spoke to voters from across the country about their reactions to the first presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Trump.

Becky from Tennessee thought Harris won. She said the vice president “made strong points about her policies” and “focused on the positive.” Edwin, a self-described independent from Florida, also said Harris won the debate. She said she was “calm and cool” and that Trump was “typical Trump,” who “just repeated what he’s been repeating for years.”

“I’m a little bit torn between the two, but I think Harris won because he was calm,” Edwin said. “I like Trump’s policies because everything was a lot lower when he was first president. I thought if he were more presidential, he would get his message across a lot better than he does now, which is often a bit of chaos.”

Carolyn, of Arlington, Virginia, thought Harris was “ahead of his time,” but when asked if she is better off financially now than she was four years ago, she said “no.”

“Things are very high. You know, the economy is out of control, I think. But she has a plan, I think it was good that she presented it,” Carolyn said, adding that she would trust Harris with fixing the economy over Trump.

Mina, from Houston, Texas, said she supported Harris before the debate and gave her the win because “she can form coherent sentences.” Alex, from the Bay Area in California, said Harris “exceeded expectations” and that Trump was “not that good.” However, he criticized the ABC News debate moderators for being “pretty biased” toward Trump.

“They fact-checked him many times, but they didn’t fact-check her, not even once,” Alex said.

Sherry, a Trump supporter who splits her time between her homes in California and Michigan, admitted she didn’t think the former president won the debate.

“I just think it’s a shame that Trump couldn’t have done a better job,” Sherry told Fox News Digital. “I love Trump. I’m going to vote for him. It didn’t convince me. But he was out of his element and he really fed her. And I think it’s a shame that he didn’t say what he wanted to do.”

Tamara from Washington DC, who is confident that Trump will handle Harris’ economic issues, told Fox News Digital that Harris “accomplished what she set out to do,” which was “get under Trump’s skin.”

“Kamala was really challenging Trump, and she spent most of her time doing that, without paying attention to a number of issues,” Tamara said. “I thought she conducted the debate better than Trump did last night, that’s for sure.”

However, Thomas from Michigan was convinced that Trump had won the debate, pointing to the “solid” policies he had outlined.

“Ultimately, people want to be safe… people want their kids to be safe. They don’t want their house broken into. They want the basics,” Thomas said.

Kenneth from Houston also gave the former president the win, saying Harris “wasn’t very good in her answers.”

“She seemed ignorant on a lot of issues,” Kenneth told Fox News Digital. “I think Trump … has led this country to the top of its economy. And he was very influential last night.”

Gina from Michigan didn’t believe there was a winner from Tuesday’s debate. She said there were “unanswered questions on both sides.” However, she praised Trump for being “more direct” with voters and “not being afraid to tell it like it is.”

Voters were divided on whether they thought more Trump-Harris debates were needed. Some said they would like to hear more discussions about policy and even look forward to the “entertainment” factor, while others said they have already decided who they will vote for in November.

“I think they need to dig deeper into some of the questions,” said Kriston of Tennessee, who told Fox News Digital she was leaning more toward Harris after the first debate.

“For me, it’s not necessary. Maybe for others, but I hope that if it is, they’ll go into the policy details, which they haven’t really said much about,” Elbert said from Washington, D.C.
