Vietnamese player hits fifth fastest serve in world in women’s volleyball

Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen hit the ball at a speed of 107 km/h in their match against Belgium at the 2024 FIVB Women’s Volleyball Challenger Cup on Sunday, making it one of the five fastest serves in women’s volleyball history.

Tuyen produced an impressive serve in the first set of the match, in which Vietnam defeated Belgium, a much stronger opponent, to win the bronze medal.

According to the Olympic Games website, the fastest women’s volleyball serves before Tuyen were: Italy’s Paola Egonu at 112.7 km/h, Serbia’s Tijana Boskovic at 110.3 km/h, Canada’s Kiera Van Ryk at 108.1 km/h, Boskovic at 107.5 km/h and Brazil’s Tandara Caixeta at 106.9 km/h.

During the match against Belgium, Tuyen again served at a speed of 106 km/h.

Tuyen, born in 2000 in the southern province of Vinh Long, weighs 75 kg and is 1.88 meters tall.

She previously helped Vietnam defend their championship at the 2024 Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) Women’s Challenge Cup after beating Kazakhstan in the final on May 29.

She scored the most points for Vietnam at the FIVB tournament, with a total of 77.

The FIVB tournament was held from July 4 to 7 and involved teams from Argentina, Belgium, Czech Republic, Kenya, Philippines (host country), Puerto Rico, Sweden and Vietnam.

The Czech Republic won the tournament by beating Puerto Rico in the final.

Winning the bronze medal is Vietnam’s biggest success at an FIVB event.
