Noah Lyles won the American 100-meter gold medal for the first time in 20 years at the Summer Olympics on Sunday.

Lyles made a charge from one of the outer lanes to beat Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson and fellow American Fred Kerley in a photo finish.

Lyles and Thompson both finished in 9.79 seconds, but it was the American who ultimately won by a few inches.

2. Kishane Thompson (Jamaica) – 9.79

3. Fred Kerley (United States) – 9.81

4. Akani Simbine (South Africa) – 9.82

5. Marcell Jacobs (Italy) – 9.85

6. Lestile Tebogo (Botswana) – 9.86

7. Kenneth Bednarek (United States) – 9.88

8. Slanting Sevilla (Jamaica) – 9.91

Lyles won the 100 meters in a remarkable finish.

The American sprinter did not have the best start in the field of eight, but he made up for it by persevering until the end and beating Thompson.

Thompson initially thought he was the winner at the finish line, as he was only focused on Kerley in the lane directly to his left.

After the photo finish, Lyles was judged to have beaten Thompson by a few inches from the outside of the track.

Lyles became the first American to win the 100 meters since Justin Gatlin won the event at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

Kerley, who won silver in Tokyo behind Italy’s Marcell Jacobs, took bronze with a time just two hundredths of a second slower than those of Lyles and Thompson.

Lyles and Kerley became the first American men’s pair to medal in the 100 meters since Gatlin won in 2004, when he shared the podium with bronze medalist Maurice Greene.

Lyles will now focus fully on the sprint double. He is expected to compete in the 200m final on Thursday.
