One of the greatest athletes in tennis history made her comeback at the US Open on Saturday.

Serena Williams, whose last match was at the 2022 US Open, was present at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing, New York, to watch the event as a spectator rather than a competitor.

The last time Williams played at the US Open, it was the final tournament of her career, and she reached the third round, where she lost to Ajla Tomljanović. At the time, she did not say she was retiring, but rather that she was “evolving” from playing the sport professionally, according to the Associated Press (h/t ESPN).

Although she did not win her last US Open, she has dominated the event in the past, winning six times in her career. She also won the US Open three consecutive years in 2012, 2013 and 2014, which was her last US Open victory.

Since playing her last game in 2022, Williams has had a successful career off the field. In addition to her philanthropic work, she has had business ventures, including ownership of Angel City FC of the National Women’s Soccer League. She announced two books in 2023 and hosted the ESPYs over the summer.

On Saturday she was able to enjoy her role as a fan of the sport she dominated for twenty years.
