Video of Nunez fight Uruguay: Darwin Nunez, Uruguay players fight in the stands with fans after Copa loss

Liverpool star Darwin Nunez and other Uruguay players were involved in a brawl with Colombian fans that broke out after their 1-0 Copa America semi-final defeat on Wednesday. Uruguayan striker Nunez unleashed a series of punches on Colombian fans after jumping into the stands at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte in a bad mood following the defeat to Colombia.

Uruguay central defender José Maria Gimenez said the players got involved in the scuffle out of concern for the safety of family members and loved ones watching the match.

“This is a disaster. Our family was in danger. We had to go to the stands to save our loved ones, with tiny newborn babies,” said the Atletico Madrid player.

“There was not a single police officer… I hope the organizers will be a little more careful with the families.

“It happens at every game because there are people who can’t handle a few drinks.”

The vast majority of the spectators in the crowd supported Colombia, but there was no separation between them and their Uruguayan counterparts.

Several Uruguayan players climbed into the crowd, ostensibly to protect the fans. Nunez was prominently present.

The fight continued for several minutes until police finally intervened.

A group of about 80-100 Uruguayan fans remained in the stadium, on the field, long after the rest of the fans had left and the Uruguayan players returned to the field to meet them.

There were also ugly scenes on the pitch after the final whistle. Players and staff from both teams got involved in a mass brawl in the centre circle after Colombia’s victory.

CONMEBOL, the South American football confederation that organizes the Copa America, issued a statement condemning the incidents.

“CONMEBOL strongly condemns all violent acts that affect football. Our work is based on the belief that football unites and connects us through its positive values.

“There is no place for intolerance and violence on and off the pitch. We invite everyone to put all their passion into supporting their national teams for the remaining days and celebrate an unforgettable party.”
