Veteran D Marc Staal retires and joins New York Rangers as player development assistant

Veteran defenseman Marc Staal announced his retirement on Thursday after 17 seasons in the NHL.

Stall will join the New York Rangers as an assistant player development officer, the team announced.

The 37-year-old played 35 games for the Philadelphia Flyers last season, scoring one goal and five points.

Staal was selected 12th overall by the Rangers in the 2005 draft and played in 1,136 career games, scoring 53 goals and 234 points while playing for the Rangers, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers and Flyers.
