Vanderbilt’s Coquelin and Ruger won the first round of qualifying at ITA All-American

Hugo Coquelin and Henry Ruger of Vanderbilt University secured their third consecutive first-round victory in the doubles qualifiers on Monday at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa after hours of rain.

They return to action for the fourth straight day today, Tuesday, September 24. The duo will face Duke’s Sam Landau and Andreja Petrovic tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. CT in the second round of doubles qualifying. The Blue Devils will bring a familiar face: TJ Pura, now an assistant coach with the Duke program, was an assistant coach with the Commodores last season.

Nathan Cox and sophomore Danil Panarin paired up against South Carolina’s Lucas Andrade Da Silva and Jelani Sarr and struggled to get a grip on the Gamecocks, losing 6-3, 6-4.

Coquelin and Ruger then took the court and faced off against Luca Staeheli and Martin Borisiouk of NC State. The Dores quickly outplayed their Wolfpack opponents, winning the first set 6-2. Borisiouk and Staeheli did the same in the second set, resuming the match with a 6-3 victory. For the second straight day, Coquelin and Ruger went to a tiebreaker in the third set, eventually winning the back-and-forth match with a 10-6 third-set victory.
