The United States men’s national soccer team had a chance to gain some positive momentum during a friendly against Canada on Saturday.

That didn’t happen as the USMNT fell to Canada 2-1 in Kansas City. The result marked Canada’s first win over the U.S. since 2022 and its first on American soil since 1957.

Canada opened the scoring with a goal from Jacob Shaffelburg in the 17th minute and extended the lead to 2 points when Jonathan David capitalized on a USA turnover.

The US halved the deficit with a goal from Lucas De La Torre in the 66th minute, but it was too little, too late.

Canada outscored the U.S. 17-8, with seven shots on target. The U.S. had possession for 58 percent of the game, but 18 fouls and an inefficient offense kept the team from winning.

Many fans blamed the lack of stability on the sidelines. Mikey Varas served as interim coach after the organization fired Gregg Berhalter. Former Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino is expected to be the next American coach, but the process to bring him on board has not yet been formalized.

American fans took to social media to plead for Pochettino and an improved squad for the future:

Let’s hope today marks the beginning of the revenue cycle for #USMNTWith Poch joining, it’s time to look at overhauling the squad where possible and flipping the switch for ’26.
It wasn’t the worst game today against Canada, but it’s time to get to work.

Pochettino has a combined record of 316-144-189 in his coaching career, having enjoyed success at Tottenham, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea, but the American team will be his toughest task yet.

The US is ranked 16th in the world and is currently preparing to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The team fell in the round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup and failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
