US women beat France 67-66 for eighth straight gold medal

The French word for “miracle” could mean “disaster” for the U.S. women’s basketball team on Sunday.

But the Americans’ eighth consecutive gold medal will be a memorable one as the virtually unbeatable world power narrowly edged out the victory.

The US survived a tough and stunning test against France by a 67-66 margin, and it was only possible because Gabby Williams’ shot at the buzzer, a shot that may go down in history, was taken with her foot on the three-point line, denying the home team a chance at overtime.
