Harriet Dart is back in action today after effortlessly beating Chloe Paquet in her opening match.

Dart is enjoying the best period of her career. After reaching the third round at Wimbledon, she won her first main draw match at Flushing Meadows.

The 26-year-old dropped just two games in a dominant performance that saw her win 6-1, 6-2 and her victory will lift her ranking to a provisional career high of 66 in the world. She will have her work cut out for her to repeat her Wimbledon feat when she takes on 13th-seeded Emma Navarro.

Meanwhile, a tearful Naomi Osaka admitted she didn’t know if she would ever return to the US Open despite having a winning return.

The two-time champion is back at Flushing Meadows after missing last year’s tournament due to the birth of her first child.

Osaka, who has also spoken openly about her mental health issues, watched American Coco Gauff win the 2023 edition and wondered if she would be able to make it back to New York.

However, she proved she is on the way back with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over 10th-seeded Jelena Ostapenko over Arthur Ashe.

Emma Raducanu was knocked out on the Grandstand court by Sofia Kenin, losing 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.

It looked like it would be a short performance as Kenin played the first set at breakneck speed, but Raducanu made a mess of it by throwing the set into three sets.

A precious service game midway through the deciding match proved costly as the former champion headed home a goal.

She has only played in one tournament since Wimbledon, and skipped the Olympics to focus on her preparation for the US Open. She will be hugely disappointed if she falls at the first hurdle. Questions remain about the direction of her career.

How did Jack Draper reach the second round?

British number one Jack Draper put the recent controversy behind him by entering the second round of the US Open in style.

Draper entered the tournament with a gloomy outlook after the events in Cincinnati, where he was accused of cheating and lying during a controversial match point against Felix Auger-Aliassime.

The 22-year-old, who has been attacked on social media by both current and former players, admitted he had been thinking about it “non-stop” when he came to Flushing Meadows but showed a clear mind as he took apart an injured Zhizhen Zhang in the first round.

He was leading 6-3, 6-0, 4-0 when the Chinese, who fell during training and injured his left knee, withdrew due to the stifling heat.
