US concludes Olympic swimming with another gold medal and new world record

The US swimming team finished the final day of competition in the pool with two gold medals and a world record.

Distance swimmer Bobby Finke delivered the first of two gold medals in the 1500-meter freestyle β€” the only individual gold medal won by a male Team USA swimmer β€” and a new world record of 14:30.67.

Katie Ledecky, whose long-distance performances at four Olympic Games have made her the most decorated American female Olympian in history, couldn’t contain her excitement as Finke, who trains with her assistant coach and former Olympian Anthony Nesty, swam to victory.

The men’s 4×100-meter medley relay team won silver. It was the only time, apart from the boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics, that an American men’s team did not win gold in that event.

The team surprisingly lost to China, despite an impressive time from Caeleb Dressel on his butterfly: 49.41, four hundredths of a second below his own world record in the 100m butterfly, which he set in Tokyo in 2021.

The competition concluded with another high for Team USA as the women’s medley relay team β€” Regan Smith (backstroke), Lilly King (breaststroke), Gretchen Walsh (butterfly) and Torri Huske (freestyle) β€” won gold by a convincing margin, setting a new world record.
