The knockout stage of the 2024 Copa America continues today in Arlington, Texas, with Group B winners Venezuela and Copa America debutants Canada going head-to-head to determine who will face favorites Argentina in the semi-finals.

Venezuela went through the Copa America group stage undefeated for the first time, scoring six goals – equalling the second-most in the group stage – including two from vice-captain Salomón Rondón and Eduard Bello. The team is back in the quarter-finals after missing out on the 2021 Copa America.

Canada’s Copa America debut is going well, despite a potentially difficult . They were drawn with Argentina, 2015 and 2016 Copa America champions Chile, and 2019 runners-up Peru in Group A. A 2-0 loss to Argentina in the tournament opener was preceded by a 1-0 win over Peru and a 0-0 draw with Chile. Jonathan David’s goal against Peru is the team’s only goal of the tournament so far.

This is the third time these two teams have met in an international match and the first time in a tournament format. They drew 2-2 on 1 June 2007 and 1-1 on 29 May 2010.
