Union committee considers golf cart regulations

During the Union Committee meeting last Monday, the rules and requirements for the use of golf carts on public roads were discussed.

Several neighborhoods in Union have requested that golf carts be allowed in their neighborhoods. Rather than issuing a separate permit for each neighborhood, Mayor Larry Solomon said that golf carts would be much easier to regulate by passing a blanket ordinance for the entire city.

The city will adopt Boone County’s current bylaws. Bill Mark, a representative of the Boone County Sheriff’s Department, presented what that will look like once it is implemented based on Kentucky’s golf cart ordinance.

This only applies to golf carts.

There are several restrictions and requirements before golf cart owners are allowed to use their golf carts on city streets, including:

  • Driving license required.
  • Must be insured.
  • Mandatory vehicle inspection by the sheriff’s office.
  • The permit and registration sticker must be clearly visible.
  • May not be used on roads with a speed limit greater than 35 mph or on state highways.

Violations can result in a fine of up to $250 and vehicle impoundment.

The Union City Commission will present the new ordinance at its next public meeting in August.
