UFC 306 PPV Rumor Killer, Big Fight Scheduled for the Sphere in Las Vegas

On Saturday night, a rumor began circulating that the two headline fights scheduled for September 14 at the UFC 306 MSG Sphere event had been leaked by the French-Canadian UFC Denver RDS broadcast, including Sean O’Malley vs. Merab Dvalishvili for the bantamweight title.

Veteran MMA journalist Ariel Helwani indicated that the broadcast was partially accurate, as the other leak was about Ilia Topuria’s first featherweight title defense against former champion Max Holloway, which is being considered for another date.

To recap, Helwani revealed that the UFC elite will likely have two title fights at UFC 306. One of them could be Alexa Grasso vs. Valentina Shevchenko 3 or a completely different opponent for Grasso if Shevchenko is unable to attend the fight. Helwani did not answer either question.

According to Helwani, the UFC has no immediate plans to headline Topuria in Spain as initially suggested. Therefore, the UFC’s unofficial October 5 date for UFC 307 in Salt Lake City, Utah, would be the best bet for that fight, along with newly minted women’s bantamweight champion Raquel Pennington taking on former champion Julianna Peña.

As of this writing, none of the fights discussed above have been signed or confirmed by the UFC. However, in an interview with Pat McAfee on Monday, UFC CEO Dana White revealed that the Sphere event will only have 10 fights instead of the traditional 12 or 13.
