Tyler Adams to miss start of 2024/25 season after back surgery

Tyler Adams will be sidelined again.

Tyler Adams to miss start of season after back surgery

United States men’s national player Tyler Adams is likely to miss the start of the 2024-25 season with Premier League club AFC Bournemouth after undergoing surgery to take part in the 2024 Copa America.

Adams is reportedly set to undergo back surgery, just days after the USMNT were eliminated from the group stage of the tournament. Adams started every game for the United States in the Copa América, but was substituted late in the first half of the first two games.

The 25-year-old struggled with physical problems towards the end of the Premier League season and although he was not fully fit for the Copa América, the injury is said to have been aggravated by the excessive playing time during the tournament.

“He wanted to play the Copa America because it was very important for him, but he had limitations and was still in pain, so two days after they were knocked out he had surgery. He’s out for a while,” said Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola.

“It’s difficult to say how long, but he won’t be fit for the start of the season. But September? October? I don’t know,” he added.

Adams’ most recent injury has sparked an online debate over whether former USMNT manager Gregg Berhalter should have started Adams in all of their Copa América matches, with many fans going so far as to say it could be a career-threatening setback for the American midfielder.

Adams, who signed for Bournemouth last summer, has made just five appearances for the club in the 2023-24 season, with the former Leeds man missing most of the campaign with a hamstring problem.
