Two officers arrested for triple murder

TWO police officers were arrested early Sunday morning following their involvement in the shooting of three young men in east Kingston.

The men – 17-year-old Oshane Stubbs, 19-year-old Orando Campbell and 20-year-old Kayshawn Smith – were killed in what police said was a shootout.

Police said the men were part of a robbery ring on the city’s east side.

Chief Inspector Tomilee Chambers, commander of the East Kingston Police Division, said in a police report Jamaican observer Monday said: “My team was traveling on Windward Road when men aroused their suspicions and the police team stopped and stepped out of their unit and gave verbal instructions to the men. After doing so, the men drew their firearms and opened fire on the police team. The police took evasive action and returned fire. After the gunfire subsided, all three men were discovered with gunshot wounds. There were two firearms next to them.”

However, on Thursday, the Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom) said significant evidence uncovered during its investigation prompted the commission to formally write to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) requesting that the two police officers involved the triple shooting, to hold.

In a statement on Thursday, the JCF said it remains steadfast in its commitment to professionalism and transparency and will continue to cooperate fully with the relevant regulatory bodies in this and all such matters.

“Based on information received regarding the recent fatal shooting incident in east Kingston involving members of the JCF, the High Command has directed that the police officers involved be detained while the Independent Commission of Inquiry continues its investigation.

“The High Command reiterates its full support to members who, in the performance of their duties, act within the law and are committed to the principle of accountability. The High Command wishes to assure the public of our commitment to supporting thorough and impartial investigations conducted by Indecom to ensure that the ends of justice are served,” the JCF said.
