Trump eyes New York Rep. Elise Stefanik for post at the United Nations

New York GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik is being eyed as President-elect Trump’s next ambassador to the United Nations.

Stefanik, the powerful chairman of the House Republican Conference, is known as a Trump favorite thanks to her aggressive defense of his policies.

According to five people who spoke to Politico about the matter, Trump wants to kick Stefanik up to the powerful diplomatic post in New York City.

Representatives for Stefanik declined to comment.

Stefanik’s departure from the House of Representatives would force Governor Hochul to call a special election within 90 days to fill her open seat in the state.

The district is ruby red and Stefanik’s replacement would almost certainly be a Republican who would not upset the expected single-digit majority in the House of Representatives.

The Republican nominee would not be chosen in a primary, but by GOP county chairmen — something that could give Stefanik even more influence over the process.

If Stefanik goes to the United Nations, she would likely be a more combative presence at the body than Trump’s last ambassadors, Nikki Haley and Kelly Craft.

The congresswoman is a harsh critic of the institution.

After the United Nations floated the idea of expelling Israel over its defensive war in Gaza, Stefanik called for a “complete reassessment of U.S. funding” to the organization.

While in Congress, Stefanik made a name for herself as an advocate against anti-Semitism on college campuses.
