Trump claims Biden turned down his offer for a golf game where he could have won $1 million if he had done one thing

Donald Trump appears to have regained his pre-assassination confidence, standing atop a rally in St. Cloud, Minnesota, and boasting that he once offered President Joe Biden a million dollars if “he could get to 100 in a round of golf.”

“I said I’d take you to any course you wanted… I’d give you $1 million if you scored 100 in golf,” Trump told the live audience. “He turned me down.”

Always up for a challenge, the real estate mogul claimed/joked that he even adjusted the offer. “Then I said, I’ll give you ten strikes a side… I’ll give you a million dollars if you could beat me. He didn’t have a chance,” Trump said. “They’re talking a pretty game, but it’s all talk.”

But the golf debate goes all the way back to the presidential debate in early June. As the heated presidential debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden unfolded, questions about how their ages might affect their ability to lead as world leaders led to a spat over their golf skills.

“I just won two club championships — not even seniors,” Trump began. “Two regular club championships. To do that, you have to be pretty smart and hit the ball far. He can’t do that. He can’t hit a ball 50 yards. He challenged me to a golf match; he can’t hit a ball 50 yards,” Trump joked.

Biden quickly responded to his opponent: “I’d like to have a driving competition. I got my handicap down to a six when I was vice president. By the way, I’ve told you before, I’d like to play golf with you if you carry your own bag. Do you think you can do it?”

Trump couldn’t let go of Biden’s alleged golf handicap, laughing at the claim: “That’s the biggest lie of all: that he had a six handicap.”

When confronted, Biden backtracked on his boast, admitting that he actually had an eight handicap. But Trump would have none of it, replying, “I’ve seen your swing. I know your swing. Let’s not act like children.”

For the average non-presidential Joe hitting the links, a score of around 100 is the “gold standard,” with half of golfers typically “breaking” that number. Those who are more skilled on the course typically score between -2 and -5.

For an average golfer playing an 18-hole round on a par 72 course, a score in the 90s is considered decent, and breaking 100 is often seen as the benchmark. However, what constitutes a good score can vary depending on the skill level of the golfer.

Lower handicap golfers often aim for comfortable scores of 70 or low 80. Meanwhile, the pros are out to make us all look bad by aiming for scores in the dreamy low 60s or even lower.

Data from the United States Golf Association shows Biden’s last official handicap was a respectable 6.7, but that was back in 2018. At 81, Biden is still enjoying his time on the course, and recent footage from 2022 gives us a glimpse of his swing, which is pretty much what you’d expect from a senior golfer.

Trump is known for his liberal interpretation of golf’s rules, often mulliganing after bad shots and pushing his ball into more favorable positions during competitive play. At a 2022 pro-am event at one of his 14 courses, the 78-year-old, who claims a rather optimistic 2.5 handicap with the USGA, was seen helping his ball into the hole after a missed putt.

Despite his unconventional swing, Trump’s technique is reliable and produces consistent results. However, the former president has repeatedly exaggerated his golfing achievements, even claiming to have won more than 20 club championships on his own courses.

Rick Reilly, the sports journalist behind the 2019 book “Commander in Cheat,” which examines Trump’s extensive history of golf cheating scandals, revealed how Trump racks up these dubious wins.

“Trump tells people he’s won 20. And that’s 100 percent a lie,” Reilly told Vox. “I played with him once, and he told me how he does it: Every time he opens a new course, because he owns 14 of them and operates another five, he plays the first club champion himself, declares it the club championship, and puts his name on the wall.”
