Trent Alexander-Arnold contract talks stall as Liverpool are reluctant to offer higher wages than two top stars

CONTRACT talks with Trent Alexander-Arnold have stalled as Liverpool are reluctant to offer him higher wages than Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

The Reds are negotiating with all three stars to extend deals that expire next summer, which has complicated matters at Anfield.

At 26, Alexander-Arnold is younger than both Salah, 32, and Van Dijk, 33, and would have a much higher resale value than his teammates if he commits to the future.

Yet Liverpool are aware that offering the biggest deal of the three to the right-back could cause unrest, especially mid-season.

Liverpool have made several offers to improve Alexander-Arnold’s deal for £180,000-a-week amid strong interest from Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, but an agreement has yet to be reached.

The England defender has not yet made a decision on his future, despite claims in a Spanish newspaper that Liverpool “already know he will not renew”.

Although he has not asked for parity with Van Dijk and Salah, who currently earn £220,000 and £350,000 a week respectively, he could earn more at both PSG and Real.

The Spanish club in particular has become an expert at offering huge wages and signing fees to players whose existing contracts expire.

And Alexander-Arnold has long been a target for Real, leading to concerns at Anfield that he is the least likely of their star trio to sign a new contract.

Van Dijk would like to stay at Liverpool but is stuck in a stalemate over the contract term the club will offer him.
