Training like an Olympian: Climbers Erin McNeice and Shauna Coxsey share TeamGB strength training tips

In the run-up to the 2024 Paris Olympics, The IndependentKate Gill explores what it takes to train like a Team GB athlete before you can compete on the world stage.

IndependentTV‘How To Train Like An Olympian’ is a series that focuses on the individual fundamentals that Olympians should focus on during their training.

Olympic finalist Erin McNeice, 20, and Tokyo 2020 Olympic competitor Shauna Coxsey, 31, discuss the importance of strength in their sport.

Coxsey said: “Climbing is a full-body sport, you’re literally holding on with the tips of your fingers and the tips of your toes. We use every muscle in our body, including our brains.”

“Strength plays a really important role. There’s a misconception that climbing is all about upper body strength, but it’s not. It’s just as much about lower body strength, really strong legs, and core strength as well.”
