Train engineer dies, at least 23 injured after NJ train crashes into tree that fell on track

“Of the 42 customers on board, 23 suffered non-life-threatening injuries, mostly minor. The train driver has been confirmed deceased,” New Jersey Transit said.

A train driver was killed and at least 23 other people were injured after a tree fell on the New Jersey River Line tracks on Monday morning, October 14.

The train was traveling south from Trenton, NJ when it struck a tree about 6:04 a.m. north of the Roebling Station, New Jersey Transit said in a statement shared with PEOPLE.

“Of the 42 customers on board, 23 suffered non-life-threatening injuries, most minor. The train operator died. The remaining 19 passengers were met by a bus,” the statement added.

In an interview with WJAR, Norris Young, one of the train passengers, recalled seeing several people sustain serious injuries.

<p>“One gentleman had a cut, he was bleeding from his head. One had an open wound, a completely open wound on his head,” he told the newspaper, describing the tree as “gigantic.”</p>
<p>Although the identity of the operator has not been released, Young told the station that he had built a bond with her.</p>
<p>“To have someone, even from that small band, just say ‘how are you?’ You know, when you wake up in the morning, how are you? You just know the smile and the nice hello, you know when you get there, and the next time you see this person, they’re just bludgeoned ” he said.</p>
<p>“She just laid there and there was nothing anyone could do,” Young said.</p>

On Tuesday, Oct. 15, River LINE service will run from Florence Station and the Entertainment Center in Camden, NJ Transit said in a statement shared with PEOPLE. Routes between the Trenton Transit Center and Florence Station will “remain suspended and replaced by buses serving all stations.”

“River LINE personnel will continue to make necessary track repairs and, in an abundance of caution, we will continue to thoroughly evaluate the area surrounding Monday’s accident before resuming regular service between Florence and Trenton,” the statement continued.

It is not yet known what caused the tree to fall onto the track. New Jersey State Police are investigating the incident.
